Report Description

The brake pads are the primary components of an automobile's braking system. They play an essential role in preventing or decelerating the vehicle as soon as the pedal is applied. Brake pads are in the brake disc's calipers, which are typically located on all four of the vehicle's wheels, as well as on two-wheeled vehicles and light and heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

The United States automotive brake pads, shoes, and linings market has shown growth in the past years, and it is anticipated to increase at a high rate in the forecast year 2023-2028. In the USA the sales of light commercial vehicles (pick-up trucks) and the replacement rate of brake pads in the pick-up trucks are high because the fleet of the pickup trucks is large compared to other vehicles. The brake pads have various advantages such as brake pads generate friction against the moving brake discs or drums that converts the moving vehicle’s kinetic energy into heat energy, which is then used to slow down and stop the vehicle. The material used in the brake pad is composed of a variety of components. Each component has its own characteristics, such as enhancing frictional characteristics at both low and high temperatures, reducing noise, extending life, increasing strength and stiffness, and decreasing porosity. Alterations in the composition of a brake pad material, such as changes in weight percentages or types of components, may alter its chemical, mechanical, and physical properties.

Market Overview

Brake systems are composed of different brake friction products that are installed in each vehicle. For example, a disc brake system consists of rotors, pads, and a drum brake which consists of brake shoe and brake drum. Vehicle production is on the rise due to the growing demand for comfort and convenience. The rising population and the improving economic conditions are leading to an increase in vehicle production in most of the countries in the region. This is positively impacting the brake friction product market. Consumer purchasing power is also on the rise. People have more disposable income and are spending more on personal vehicles. This is leading to a rise in vehicle production. In addition, e-commerce is also increasing. The automotive brake friction product market is also growing due to an increase in the number of vehicle safety features mandated by the government.

Market Drivers

In United States there are several drivers that have contributed to the growth and development of the United States automotive brake pads, shoes, and linings market. Hydraulic brakes are being used in most of the modern vehicles because hydraulic brake systems are the standard on the new line of advanced and futuristic vehicles, we are seeing on the road today. They use fluid to slow a vehicle down. The brake pedal is connected to a piston rod, which contains brake fluid, and the brake pedal is applied to the master cylinder. The pressure applied to the brake pedal converts into hydraulic pressure. The hydraulic pressure is then distributed throughout the system through hydraulic lines. The wheel cylinder pushes the brake shoes outwards against the brake drums, stopping the vehicle. The hydraulic brake fluid acts like a lubricant, reducing frictional loss when braking at high speeds and increasing the resistance of the vehicular components to wear and tear. This brake system has no joints. It has virtually no vulnerable components. It rarely requires part replacements. It has a simpler build and is much lighter in weight. It produces less thermal stress than mechanical brakes, which in the long run helps it remain functional and efficient for a much longer period. It also provides more braking power because it has a greater contact area that supports heat dissipation.

Market Trends

Nowadays most of the automotive manufacturers are using disc brakes in the vehicle, as the disc brake systems are made up of two main parts: friction side (which is the hub/rotor clamping system) and apply side (which includes pedals, pushrods, boosters (if there are any), master cylinders, and hydraulics). In more modern cars, there's a third system electromechanical controls like ABS (Anti-lock Braking System). ABS was originally designed to quickly adjust brake pressure to stop brakes or tires from locking up, which would have caused uncontrolled skidding. Simple ABS systems have since evolved into more complex ones that use car-control or hydraulic-force applications for EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) systems.

Technological Advancements

With time, there have been many enhancements in technology of automotive brakes system which have been made such as, traction control, antilock braking, electronic stability control, brake-by-wire, regenerative braking, and electronic brake force distribution.

Orbis Brakes, a USA-based company has introduced new brake technology for passenger cars. The company has patented a periodic wave disc brake which is developed in a partnership between the company and NASA. The new wave disc brake uses aerodynamics which helps in providing superior surface cooling for brakes, extends vehicle fuel efficiency and range, it also reduces dangerous brake fade. The company claims that it is made up of 100% recycled iron and the weight of the brake is 50% less than the conventional cast-iron brakes, it also has unique design which helps in reduction of brown emissions.

Market Opportunity

The United States automotive brake pads, shoes, and linings market is performing good from the past few years, the market has started to regain itself of the impact of COVID-19. The sales of the brakes are being increased over time, the demand for the brakes is also high in the aftermarket due to the replacement rate of brake pads for the vehicles is high. In the demand category the aftermarket of the brake shoe market is very high as the replacement of the brake pads, shoes and lining is required over the certain period in the vehicle.

Market Challenges

One of the major challenges in the automotive brake system is that when the brake pedal pulses and the vehicle shudders and shudders when the pedal is applied, it is often indicative of a brake rotor issue. In most modern vehicles, the brakes are operated by the clamped brake rotors, which generate friction that slows the vehicle. However, over time the surface of the rotors can become warped. This is due to the accumulation of brake material on the rotors, which can become damaged due to debris. The rotors can also be warped out of proportion to the brake pads, causing the brake pads to vibrate and potentially shake the entire vehicle.

The most common thing that can cause the brakes to fail is a hole in the brake lines. Over time, the brake fluid will leak out, and eventually there won't be enough left to transfer the pressure from your pedal to your tires. Brakes can also fail if your discs or drums start to wear out, meaning they can't give your wheels enough friction to keep them in place. There are other mechanical problems that can happen in the system, but they're not as common.

The use of pneumatic tires has had a major influence on the development of brakes. Pneumatic tires provided greater comfort on uneven surfaces and enabled driving at higher speeds, however, they did not match the primitive brakes available at the time. A pad applied directly to a tire may have been suitable for a bicycle, but not for a much more heavily laden automobile. Consequently, a new form of brake, concealed within the wheel, was developed. Contrary to popular belief, the drum brake was developed at the same time as the disc brake.

Recent Development

The introduction of Integrated Brake Controls (IBC) in 2019 vehicles is set to be one of the most exciting technologies for enthusiasts. An IBC is a new type of brake control system that replaces conventional braking components with functional control. It is a vacuum-free booster and slip control system that eliminates the need for a power train vacuum pump or a vacuum pump, replacing them with a smaller high-pressure pump instead. The integrated brake control system is electronically controlled and uses a plunger-type motor to push brake fluid into the IBC. The pedal input of the driver is interpreted through a hydraulic simulator, providing the driver with the feel of a conventional brake system. The IBC will be implemented in large volumes by a leading vehicle manufacturer, providing improved performance across a wide variety of light duty vehicles.
