As the world continues its fight against
the novel coronavirus, major medical device manufacturers are introducing new
and advanced technologies for the better diagnosis and treatment of patients
inflicted from the viral infection. The SARS-CoV-2 virus shows rapid
dissemination and potential harm in the respiratory system, characterized by a
severe form of pneumonia. Therefore, it has become a challenge for medical
organizations to efficiently recognize those patients with COVID-19 pneumonia
who require supplemental oxygen and intensive care management.
There are different diagnostic tools to
evaluate patients with suspected pneumonia, but every tool has its pros and
cons. While computed tomography (CT Scan) is one of the best imaging
modalities to identify lungs infected with SARS-CoV-2, it is difficult to
perform scanning on every suspected patient due to time consumption, heavy
costs, exposure to radiation, increased possibility of cross-contamination, and
even non-availability of the device at some hospitals. Currently, lung
ultrasound is an excellent and practical diagnostic tool for early
detection of pneumonia in patients infected from novel coronavirus as it is a
user-friendly and convenient method that provide rapid feedbacks to support
medical decisions. Physicians use point-of-care ultrasound to make
precise diagnosis of pneumonia, especially among children as it exposes them to
less ionizing radiation. Modern ultrasound machines (portable and
ultra-portable) have long battery life and can be easily configured with smart
devices, which makes their application possible even in remote areas.
Amidst the rising incidences of
coronavirus incidences, the demand for portable ultrasound systems is
expanding. Driven by the high clinical demand, GE Healthcare System
unveiled an intelligent point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), VenueFitTM.
The streamlined and advanced POCUS system is the smallest in GE Healthcare’s
Venue series. The latest ultrasound system facilitates scanning with its
easy-to-use touchscreen, flexible scanning tools, and a small footprint so that
the medical device can be adjusted in confined spaces or along the bedside for
the convenience of the patient. Alongside VenueFit, GE Healthcare also launched
the industry-first AI offerings to facilitate cardiac imaging on VenueTM
and VenueGoTM.
The VenueFit POCUS offers several
advantages over the conventional ultrasound systems available in the market.
Its sleek and small design facilitates portability and enhances workflow
efficiency, whereas the advanced system provides real-time images for
early detection of COVID-19 symptoms. The sophisticated diagnostic tool allows
clinicians to quickly triage and monitor patients and provide early treatment
to the patients inside or outside the clinical settings. The point-of-care
ultrasound eliminates the need for doctors to struggle with the interface as
they can just scan the patients and get the information immediately with Lung
Sweep tool and RealTime EF (Ejection Fraction).
Lung Sweep tool is a rapid
visualization device, available exclusively with the Venue series, that
presents clinicians with a panoramic
view of the entire lung when patted on the body. The tool
detects the ribs sequentially and shows coronal and sagittal coverage, which
aids in the diagnosis of pneumonia. Using the “lung” control button, the
physician can see the anterior and posterior parts of the lungs at the same
time and even switch between the sides. The device automatically activates at
the beginning of each sweep and deactivates when the probe is lifted at the end
of the sweep. The lung sweep tool allows examination with minimum taps on the screen and
thereby reduces examination time. However, lung sweep does not display the full
of the lung during live scanning, rather the location of the lung scanned
during the review.
The RealTime
EF is the industry’s first AI tool that allows physicians
to calculate cardiovascular activities such as cardiac cycle timing, real-time
ejection fraction and the ability to pump blood during live scanning in apical
4CH view. When the user manages to find an adequate view, they can determine
accurate measurements with the help of an integrated quality indicator. Thus,
the AI-powered tool for fast critical cardiac measurement help to reduce the
need for electrocardiogram monitoring, improve clinical confidence and reduce
hospitalization costs.
The VenueFit device has built-in quality indicators that
display the message “Slow Down” on the screen if the operator runs the scan too
fast. Once the probe comes with the skin, the quality indicator varies among
red/yellow/green depending on the contact between skin and probe. The green
color indicates close contact of the frame portion with the skin while yellow
and red indicate minimal contact or air. Patients with end-stage renal disease
are more vulnerable to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. VenueFit POCUS system consists
of Renal Diagram,
an easy and intelligent documentation tool that makes it easy for clinicians to
follow up on patients with a suspected kidney infection.
The multipurpose VenueFit POCUS system takes point-of-care
imaging to the next level, providing a fast, simple, and precise way to
detect the health status of an individual. The new-age device reduces the
number of keystrokes needed to perform the examination, provides visualization
for needle placement, supports the collection of meaningful data, and reduces
variability. VenueFit is one of the most secure ultrasound systems
designed for easy servicing and enhancing the patient’s diagnostic experience
every time. The large monitor of the device enhances the visualization
experience for the clinician while being durable to withstand accidental
damages.
