To end manual scavenging in India, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras have created a robot called "HomoSEP," in 2022. Ten units deployed across Tamil Nadu, with researchers already in contact with sanitation workers to identified locations. Gujarat and Maharashtra locations are also being considered.

The first robotic drain cleaner has been acquired by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC). To clean any kind of sewer manhole, the civic body purchased Bandicoot, a robotic cleaning device.
