Continuously
developing pipeline infrastructure, smart city projects and increasing
government focus on shifting towards gas-based economy to drive India city gas distribution
through 2030
According to TechSci Research report, “India
City Gas Distribution Market By Type, By Source of Supply, By End Use,
Competition, Forecast & Opportunities, 2015 – 2030”, the
City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in India is projected to grow at
a CAGR of 10% during the forecast period (2020-2030). Growth in the country’s CGD
market can be attributed to easy availability and accessibility of cost
competitive natural gas in respect to any other liquid fuel. During
2020-30, the country’s CGD network is anticipated to witness robust growth on
account of increasing number of vehicles coupled with rising population and
growing urbanization across the country. Moreover, the country’s CGD
market offers huge growth opportunities as expansion of CGD network in India is
among the top-most priorities of Indian Government.
Over the last few years, the government has taken various
initiatives
in the CGD sector, an increasing number of companies are being authorized and
granted licenses in Round 9 and 10 to operate in CGD industry in different
geographies across the country. In 2018, regulations pertaining to authorization of City Gas
Distribution network were amended. The new and revised regulations helped in
gaining more participation from public & private sector in the country’s
CGD market, this resulted in expanding the coverage of CGD network to 228 GAs
covering overall 70.86% of the cumulative population and 52.80% of the area of
the country.

in development of the Smart City Projects and development in the gas pipeline
infrastructures of the country is also going to push the market of city gas
distribution as the new infrastructure will result in the installation of CGD
network in the households. Various plans of the government to promote the use
of PNG across the industrial as well as commercial sector is also expected to
drive the market of City Gas Distribution in India.

Gas Distribution, the domestically supplied had the majority of share in 2019. Region
