The
appliance maker celebrates a production milestone and opens its enlarged
Residential Air Conditioner facility in Cikarang, cementing Indonesia as a
regional export and manufacturing hub.

Indonesia celebrated the production milestone of three million units and
inaugurated its Residential Air Conditioner factory in Cikarang, West Java, on
September 9, 2026. The achievement encompasses approximately 2.25 million air
conditioner units, one million refrigerator units and 367,500 washing machine
units produced in Indonesia, while the company's exports have reached
approximately two million units to markets across ASEAN and North America as of
2026. The Cikarang Residential Air Conditioner facility occupies a
51,405-square-meter site, with its building area set to expand from
approximately 13,000 to 43,000 square meters; Midea's refrigerator factory in
Karawang spans more than 150,000 square meters, and the company has now
established Indonesia's largest electronics manufacturing base with a combined
facility area of 218,405 square meters covering air conditioners, refrigerators
and washing machines. The inauguration was attended by Deputy Minister of
Industry Faisol Riza, members of Indonesia's House of Representatives, and
senior Midea leadership, reinforcing the government's emphasis on local content
requirements and the country's ambition to become a strategic manufacturing
partner within global supply chains.
According
to Jack Ding, President Director, Midea Electronics Indonesia, “The
achievement of 3 million units marks an important milestone in Midea's
manufacturing journey in Indonesia. We will continue to invest, strengthen
local production, and contribute to the growth of Indonesia's manufacturing
industry.” Further, Ma Kai, President of
Residential Air Conditioner, PT Jaya Refrigeration Equipment added, “We
will continue to strengthen local investment and production, increase the use
of domestic suppliers, and maintain safe, compliant, and sustainable operations
to make a positive contribution to Indonesia.”
According
to TechSci Research, Midea's expansion in Indonesia exemplifies the
repositioning of Southeast Asia from a consumption market into a manufacturing
and export platform for the global appliance industry. The three-million-unit
milestone and the scaling of the Cikarang factory reflect a deliberate strategy
of relocating significant production capacity closer to fast-growing tropical
markets while building export capacity into ASEAN and North America. Indonesia
offers Midea a combination of factors that increasingly define the new
geography of appliance manufacturing: a large domestic demand base driven by
rising household incomes and hot-climate cooling requirements, competitive
labor and land costs, government support for local content and domestic
component requirements, and preferential trade access that makes the country a
viable gateway for regional and Western markets.
The
strategic intent positioning Indonesia as a key production base serving global
markets rather than merely a sales territory signals how Chinese appliance
majors are hedging against trade tensions and diversifying supply chains while
deepening their hold on emerging-market share. The expansion also creates
meaningful competitive pressure on incumbent regional players, both local
manufacturers and competitors with established Southeast Asian operations, as
scale, cost position and local-content compliance become decisive competitive
variables. For the Indonesian economy, the investment yields export revenue,
employment and supplier ecosystem development, aligning with the government's
industrial deepening agenda. Risks include currency volatility, intensifying
price competition, execution of the expanded factory ramp-up and the pace of
local supplier development.
TechSci
Research expects continued capacity expansion by global appliance manufacturers
across Southeast Asia, with Indonesia alongside Vietnam and Thailand emerging
as a core node in the global supply chain for air conditioning and home
appliances.
