Star
Localmart, the retail arm of the Sanjay Ghodawat Group (SGG), acquired
DusMinute, a Bengaluru-based retail chain operating exclusively in gated
communities. The deal marks a significant step in Star Localmart’s growth
trajectory, expanding its retail footprint in Karnataka. With the addition of
DusMinute’s 40 outlets, Star Localmart’s total store count has now reached 170
stores, making it the largest retail player in Karnataka.
DusMinute,
founded with a focus on hyperlocal convenience, operates within residential
complexes and caters to everyday consumer needs. Its offerings include
groceries, fruits, vegetables, household essentials, and other daily-use items.
Beyond its physical presence, the company has built strong customer engagement
through its app-based doorstep delivery service, bringing convenience directly
to residents. This model has made DusMinute a trusted name among gated
community dwellers, blending modern retail with accessibility.
The
acquisition aligns closely with Star Localmart’s mission of bringing affordable
and modern retail formats to communities across India. DusMinute’s presence in
urban residential complexes complements Star Localmart’s strategy of focusing
on both urban convenience stores and rural supermarket formats, ensuring a
balanced expansion.
DusMinute
has also been backed by investors in recent years. In July 2023, the company
raised around INR11.5 crore in a bridge funding round led by Inflection Point
Ventures, with additional participation from banker Bandana Kankani, the Indian
Angel Network, and other angel investors. This acquisition marks an important
milestone for these early backers, while also providing DusMinute with the
operational strength and scale of a larger group.
Star
Localmart is currently focused on expanding its presence in tier-2 to tier-6
towns, redefining the grocery shopping experience for semi-urban and rural
consumers. With modern supermarket formats, efficient supply chains, and a
community-first approach, the company is reshaping how essential goods are
delivered in these markets. The group has already announced ambitious expansion
plans across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, with a
goal of achieving INR 5,000 crore in revenue over the next five years.
Looking
ahead, the acquisition of DusMinute is expected to reinforce Star Localmart’s
broader vision of scaling up to 3,000 stores by 2030. By combining DusMinute’s
gated-community model with its own wide-format retail strategy, Star Localmart
is positioning itself as one of the most accessible, trusted, and future-ready
retail networks in India.
