SGPC Approached by Central Body to Promote Organic Farming in Punjab

SGPC has been promoting organic farming in Punjab by creating awareness among farmers

India: The Union Agriculture Ministry has approached the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to promote organic farming practices. The strategy is to promote a common platform for approaching farmers of the state. The Assistant Director of Regional Centre of Organic Farming, Haryana, R S H Srivathsa, has approached different states to tie up with Punjab with a holistic approach for achieving success in organic farming across the country.

The Regional Centre of Organic Farming intends to build a platform to approach the farmers for building the organic farming projects that run successfully across various gurdwaras. In 2015, SGPC has started to grow organic vegetables in 7 acers of land in Gurdwara Satlani Sahib for langar (community kitchen) of the Golden Temple.

TechSci Research depicts that the collaboration between local bodies and central agriculture body is set to benefit the organic farming in India. Moreover, increasing land area is set to increase the exports of organic food products in countries such as United States, Europe and MEA.

According to a recently published report by TechSci Research “Global Organic Food Market By Product Type, By Region, Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011 – 2021”, global market for organic food is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 14% during 2016-2021, on account of high demand for organic food in retail stores, restaurants, schools and office cafeterias. Europe dominated demand for organic food across the globe and the region is projected to continue dominating the market through 2021. Further, organic fruits & vegetables dominated global organic food market, due to high content of protective antioxidants, less pesticide residue and low level of toxic chemicals in organically cultivated fruits & vegetables. White Wave Foods, Hain Celestial, General Mills, UNFI, Sprouts Farmers Market and Edeka Group are few of the major players operating in global organic food market.
