BHEL Starts Operation of its First 800 MW Supercritical Thermal Power Plant

The increasing operations of thermal power plant will surge the demand for power and distribution transformer market in India

India: Power equipment manufacturer company, BHEL has made a start on commercial operations of its first 800 MW unit, supercritical thermal plant at Raichur, Karnataka. The milestone was achieved through its first unit 2x800 MW commissioning and also the supply and execution of 4,010 MW of coal based sets for Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL). Apart from that BHEL is also executing KPCL’s first gas-based combined cycle power project of 370 MW capacity at Yelahanka, Bengaluru.

TechSci Research depicts that the increasing capacity of coal-fired power plants would enhance the network of Transmission Lines which would provide a big thrust to the Indian Power transmission & Distribution segment, and would pose a huge demand for Power & Distribution Transformer, as well. The transformer manufacturers in India as well as in other countries have started investing heavily towards their research and development efforts. On account of increasing penetration of Transmission Line and Substation, the Indian Power & Distribution Transformer market is expected to expand in near future.

According to released report of TechSci Research, “Indian Power and Distribution Transformers Market Forecast and Opportunities, 2020”,the power and distribution transformers market in India is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 10% till 2020. Power transformers contribute a major portion in overall market revenues due to their higher price points. Under the 12thfive year plan (2012-2017), Indian government allocated US$ 200 billion for strengthening the country’s power generation, transmission and distribution sector. One of the major developments underway includes the country’s shift from 765 kV to 1200 kV power transmission. This, in turn, is fueling the demand for EHV and UHV class power transformer installations throughout the country.
