India VoIP Subscriber Base to Increase Threefold in Five Years

With the implementation of National Telecom Policy 2012 allowing major changes for voice over internet telephony (VoIP) the demand for VoIP services will witness huge growth in the coming years

Voice over Internet was a buzz word around the world during the 20th century and it created a buzz with its special features and offerings. Voice over Internet Protocol has proved to be a boon for users worldwide, especially businesses as VoIP has decreased their communication expenses significantly. VoIP has become an integral part of corporations worldwide for communication. The BPO’s of the world are highly dependent on VoIP for their day to day operations. On the personal front VoIP is yet to enter the households around the world other than through Skype and similar free platforms. Asia Pacific has been a tremendous market for VoIP service providers as majority of the ITES and IT companies are present in Asia Pacific region.

The internet revolution has changed Indians in many ways from shopping experience to learning experience; everything has been influenced by internet now. But one experience was left untouched by internet: i.e. the way Indians talk. But with implementation of the National Telecom Policy this is also expected to change as the Government of India has allowed full-fledged use of VoIP in India. This regulation is bound to make the change in the Indian telecom industry as Indian VoIP market will reach new levels now. The market is still at its nascent stage but is expected to grow enormously in the years to come. According to Karan Chechi, Research Director at TechSci Research “The number of Indian VoIP subscribers is expected to touch 65.7 Million by 2017 on the sidelines of growing internet penetration, migration within and outside Indian subcontinent”. Previously Indian VoIP market was majorly dependent on corporate houses and SME (small and medium enterprises), but now the focus will shift to residential users and mobile users. The Indian telecom industry is set to feel the heat as now VoIP can be used for calling a mobile phone in India which was previously restricted..

“The approval is good news for Reliance Industries as the company can now work over VoIP services with pan-India 4G licenses. RIL will now offer 4G data and voice services to customers who seek large data plans in India. The company does not have to acquire an existing telecom operator to take a lead in the industry with the latest changes. The company can now offer affordable service to consumers with pan-India licenses” said Mr. Chechi.
