The completed transaction expands BASF’s
reach in biological crop protection at a time when growers are looking for more
sustainable pest-management tools.
United
States: Paine Schwartz Partners announced on 1
April 2026 that it had successfully sold AgBiTech to BASF Agricultural
Solutions, following the close of the transaction on 31 March 2026. The
deal is strategically important because AgBiTech is not a niche local player;
it is a global biological crop-protection company with manufacturing
capabilities in the United States, Australia and Brazil and
distribution across major agricultural markets. AgBiTech’s platform is built
around naturally occurring viruses used to control caterpillar pests in key row
crops, which makes the acquisition highly relevant as global agriculture shifts
toward lower-residue, more targeted crop-protection solutions. For BASF, the
transaction strengthens its biologicals portfolio at a time when regulators,
growers and food-value chains are increasingly rewarding sustainability-linked
inputs.
AgBiTech
has built a strong reputation for delivering effective, sustainable biological
insecticide solutions to farmers in key agricultural markets,”
said Kevin Schwartz, CEO and Managing Partner of Paine Schwartz. “We
are proud of the growth the company achieved during our partnership and believe
BASF Agricultural Solutions is the right strategic owner to support the next
phase of AgBiTech's development. This successful outcome reflects our approach
of partnering with management teams to build high-quality businesses that are
attractive to leading strategic acquirers.”
“Paine
Schwartz has been an exceptional partner in helping AgBiTech expand our reach
and leadership in biological crop protection,”
said Adriano Vilas-Boas, CEO of AgBiTech. “Together, we have
scaled our commercial capabilities, invested in innovation, and brought
sustainable crop protection solutions to more growers in key countries. We are
excited to join BASF Agricultural Solutions and believe their global platform
will further accelerate the adoption of biological technologies in
agriculture.”
“The
biologicals market continues to grow rapidly, and acquiring AgBiTech
strengthens our position in this attractive segment,”
said Livio Tedeschi, President of BASF Agricultural Solutions.
“AgBiTech's proven biological technologies complement our existing portfolio
and will help us expand biological solutions for farmers across important
geographic markets.”
According
to TechSci Research, this deal is important
because it reflects the broader reallocation of capital in crop protection away
from purely synthetic chemistry and toward integrated biological platforms.
TechSci Research believes BASF is not merely buying a product line; it is
buying manufacturing capability, regulatory access, farmer relationships and a
faster route into a segment with structurally higher long-term relevance.
Biological solutions are likely to gain share where residue concerns, resistance
management and sustainability targets are tightening. In that context, the
AgBiTech acquisition gives BASF stronger positioning in one of the most
commercially attractive adjacencies in modern crop protection.
