Sungrow Opens State-of-the-Art Hydrogen Technology Laboratory in Germany

Sungrow launches a hydrogen technology lab in Munich to advance electrolysis, P2X innovation, and global green hydrogen commercialization.

Munich, Germany: Sungrow Research Center has announced the launch of its European Hydrogen Technology Laboratory in Munich, marking a significant step in the company’s global green hydrogen innovation strategy. Strategically located at the Munich Airport Business Park, the facility will serve as a hub for advancing water electrolysis and Power-to-X (P2X) technologies, in line with Europe’s stringent hydrogen development standards.

The laboratory has been designed as a cutting-edge, safety-first facility, fully compliant with German regulations including ASiG, GefStoffV, and BG RCI. It features an 8-fold ventilation system and real-time hydrogen/oxygen monitoring to ensure secure operations for its diverse team of international researchers. The facility integrates material fabrication, component testing, and digital data analysis, creating a closed-loop R&D chain from material development to system validation.

Currently, the lab houses four specialized divisions—Physical, Optical, Chemical, and Electrochemical—equipped with advanced tools such as 3D printing, SEM microscopy, and high-precision PEM assembly systems. With significant room for expansion, the facility is designed to accommodate future technological developments and leverage globally recognized test stations for highly accurate pressurized electrochemical characterization.

The Munich laboratory complements Sungrow Hydrogen’s broader innovation network, which includes a 30MW water electrolysis hydrogen production empirical platform, a key materials research center, and a product research center. Together, these assets form a complete innovation chain that supports both localized research and international collaboration.

Through this investment, Sungrow Hydrogen aims to accelerate the commercialization of green hydrogen solutions, reinforce its technological leadership, and contribute to the advancement of the global hydrogen industry.

According to TechSci Research, the establishment of Sungrow’s European Hydrogen Technology Laboratory in Munich is set to deliver significant benefits to the chemical industry, particularly in advancing green hydrogen applications. By focusing on water electrolysis and Power-to-X (P2X) technologies, the facility will enable the development of high-efficiency hydrogen production methods, reducing reliance on fossil-based feedstocks. This is especially critical for the chemical sector, where hydrogen is a key input in ammonia, methanol, and other essential chemical processes. The lab’s integrated R&D chain, spanning material development, component testing, and system validation, ensures rapid innovation cycles, accelerating the adoption of cost-effective and scalable green hydrogen solutions. Its specialized labs, equipped with advanced tools such as high-precision PEM assembly and electrochemical characterization platforms, will help optimize catalyst performance, improve system durability, and lower production costs. Moreover, by adhering to stringent German safety and environmental standards, the facility reinforces sustainable innovation practices. As part of Sungrow’s global hydrogen strategy, the Munich lab enhances international collaboration and drives commercialization, ultimately supporting the chemical industry’s decarbonization goals and strengthening its competitiveness in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
