June 2025 — Amazon has announced a
significant USD 10 billion investment in North Carolina to expand its cloud
computing infrastructure and accelerate advancements in artificial
intelligence (AI). The investment includes the development of new AWS data
centers in Richmond County, which are expected to create 500 high-skilled jobs
and support thousands more across the company’s extensive data
center supply chain.
This initiative marks one of
the largest technology investments in the state's history and underscores North
Carolina’s growing status as a strategic hub for advanced digital
infrastructure. Amazon’s expansion aligns with national priorities around digital
transformation, AI leadership, and economic revitalization in underserved
regions.
The company plans to roll out
comprehensive workforce development programs in partnership with local
institutions. These include data center technician courses, fiber optic fusion
splicing workshops, and K–12 STEM education initiatives aimed at fostering
early interest in science and technology careers. These efforts are designed to
equip residents with the technical skills required for long-term success in the
digital economy and build a sustainable local talent pipeline.
In addition, Amazon is
launching the Amazon Richmond County Community Fund with an initial
contribution of USD 150,000, offering grants up to USD 10,000 to support
programs focused on STEM education, sustainability, workforce development, and
community well-being. Nonprofits, educational institutions, and local
development organizations are eligible to apply for funding.
Since 2010, Amazon has
invested USD 12 billion in North Carolina, contributing approximately USD 13.1
billion to the state’s GDP, and supporting more than 24,000 direct and 26,000
indirect jobs across its fulfillment, logistics, and cloud infrastructure facilities.
This latest commitment
solidifies Amazon’s role as a key economic and innovation driver in the region.
It also reflects the company’s broader strategy to meet rising demand for cloud
services, enhance AI capabilities, and deepen its community and workforce
engagement across the U.S.
