Jaguar Land Rover to Begin Testing Autonomous Technology in the UK
United
Kingdom: Tata owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) plans to create over
100 vehicle fleet for research of autonomous testing over the period of next
four years. First group of models scheduled to hit the streets later this year
for testing.
The company plans to test the initial group
of models on a 66 km stretch on motorways and city roads located near their
headquarters and manufacturing plants in Central England. The scheduled initial
test runs will include vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure
communication technologies which will permit cars to interact with each other
as informed by the company.
United Kingdom is one of the prominent
locations for testing this technology and implementation of autonomous
technology. Apart from Jaguar Land Rover, Ford Motors has also been investing a
lot of resources for autonomous testing. Ford Motors enjoys a
government-sanctioned autonomous testing project in England, also, Volvo is
planning on testing driverless cars in London by next year.
“The firm's technology, which includes a
three-dimensional advanced view of the street ahead to recognize barriers and
radio signal communication between cars, could reduce hazards. Our connected and automated technology could
help improve traffic flow, cut congestion and reduce the potential for
accidents”, said Tony Harper, Head of Research, Jaguar Land Rover.
According to a recent report published by TechSci Research, “Global
Autonomous Car Technology Market Forecast and
Opportunities, 2035 – ADAS, Semi-Autonomous, Fully-Autonomous”, Global
autonomous car technology market is primarily divided into three segments -
Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) car technologies, semi-autonomous car
technology and fully-autonomous car technology. ADAS technologies are currently
moving at a brisk pace on account of rising inclination towards greater
automation. Moreover, fully-autonomous cars are expected to be commercially
available by 2025, which is expected to translate into dramatic growth in the
market. Key factors which are expected to drive growth in the market over the
next twenty years include anticipated increase in regulations mandating
integration of autonomous technology in new vehicles, decline in prices of
autonomous technology and the rising focus on safety on roads.
TechSci
Research believes that, rigorous efforts are made on testing of these
autonomous vehicles to provide complete security and safety of the passengers.
However, if the test runs are carried out hassle free and are successful, these
vehicles would be expected to hit the roads very soon. Furthermore, by the
successful implementation of this technology, it is expected that demand for
autonomous vehicles are expected to strengthen in the coming years.
