Apple to have curved OLED Displays in its flagship product by 2018

South Korea: Apple Inc. is planning to have curved OLED display screen deployed in its upcoming iPhone devices. Towards the same, the company has entered into three-year agreement with Samsung for manufacturing of 100 million Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays for the coming iPhone devices, including iPhone 7.

Further, it is projected that iPhones and other Apple devices such as smartwatch produced in 2017 onwards would switch to OLED displays from LCD displays which not only provide bright colors, sharp images, but also consumer less power, making devices more power efficient.

In December last year, Apple held discussions with major display makers such as Samsung Display, LG Display, Japan Display for increasing the manufacturing capacity of OLED displays. Under the agreement with Samsung, the company would provide Apple with 100 million 5.5-inch OLED panels over the period of three-years.

Apart from Samsung, other companies such as LG Display, Japan Display, Foxconn are also expanding their manufacturing capacity for OLED displays. In March 2016, Foxconn, a Taiwan based company acquired two-third stake in Sharp Corporation, a Japan based company. Foxconn is currently aiming to produce OLEDs for smartphones by 2018, and gradually manufacturing larger OLEDs.

TechSci Research, a global consulting and market research firm analyses that with introduction of OLED displays in smartphones would not only allow smartphone makers to cut down the thickness and bezels due to elimination of the need for backlighting as in traditional LCDs.

According to the recent report published by TechSci Research, “China OLED Market Forecast and Opportunities, 2020”, China OLED market is projected to grow at a CAGR over 38% through 2021.
