India Decorative Paints Market was valued at USD 10.57 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 22.95 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 13.79%.

The India decorative paints market is expanding rapidly, supported by rising disposable incomes, urbanization, home improvement culture, and the deepening of distribution networks into tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Decorative paints remain the largest category within India's coatings demand, spanning emulsions, enamels, distemper, wood finishes, and specialty interior products. The housing pipeline underneath this demand is substantial: more than 1 crore urban houses have been completed and delivered under PMAY-Urban as of August 2026, with 1.25 crore houses sanctioned and PMAY-U 2.0 approvals crossing 18.38 lakh each completed home feeding fresh interior finishing demand.

The headroom argument is anchored in consumption arithmetic: India's per capita paint consumption is roughly 4 kg against a global average of 13–15 kg  a gap that defines the category's long runway as repainting cycles shorten and first-time users upgrade from cement finishes to emulsions. Volumes have been compounding accordingly: industry reporting shows Indian paint volumes grew 8–9% in FY2024-25, with the near term normalizing to 4–5% as price competition plays out.

Company-level evidence confirms the demand pulse. Market leader Asian Paints reported Q1 FY2026-27 consolidated net sales of ₹10,521.4 crore, up 17.9% year-on-year, with standalone net profit up 34.3% to ₹1,478.4 crore, and management maintaining a 8–10% volume growth target for the year while ruling out immediate price hikes.  Volume-led, price-stable growth of this kind signals a market competing on reach and premiumization rather than passing through cost increases.

One of the most important trends is the accelerating shift toward water-based formulations, which lead the product mix on odor, drying-time, and environmental advantages. The health logic is quantified: the US EPA reports organic pollutant levels average 2–5 times higher indoors than outdoors, and can reach up to 1,000 times outdoor levels during activities such as paint stripping with paints among the emitting sources. Low-VOC, water-based systems are therefore winning homes, schools, and healthcare projects, and export-oriented producers also track US federal VOC content limits under 40 CFR Part 59 as the reference standard.

Recent developments sharpen competitive intensity. New entrants and capacity expansions have triggered emulsion price competition, pushing incumbents toward premiumization sheen upgrades, dust-repellent and anti-bacterial ranges, and in-store tinting to protect realizations while volumes normalize. West India remains the largest regional market on the strength of its housing stock, industrial base, and brand distribution depth.

Challenges include the premiumization-versus-discount tension, raw-material volatility in titanium dioxide and monomers, and tightening VOC and product-stewardship expectations. None of this dent the structural story: a young housing stock, 1 crore+ completed urban homes and counting, a 4 kg per-capita consumption base converging toward global norms, and the premium water-based shift together underpin the market's double-digit growth path to 2031.
